Becoming a Listening Group Leader

The Leader’s Role
As a BLG Leader, your role is to facilitate a meaningful dialogue centered on Scripture, in an online "zoom- like" setting, while fostering an atmosphere of trust, encouragement, and spiritual growth. Here are key aspects of effective group leadership:
- Create a Welcoming Environment: Begin each session with prayer, acknowledging God’s plan for your time together. Welcome new participants and set a tone of warmth and inclusivity.
- Encourage Participation: Use affirming language to acknowledge contributions. If there is silence, be patient and allow time for reflection. Call on participants gently to foster engagement.
- Maintain Focus: Guide discussions to stay centered on the Scripture passage. Redirect conversations when necessary, ensuring the group remains focused on the Scripture.
- Foster Accountability: Encourage participants to consider how they can apply the Scripture to their lives. During follow-up sessions, revisit previous discussions to check in on their progress.
- Model Vulnerability: Share your own struggles and victories to demonstrate authenticity. This helps create a culture of openness and trust within the group.
The BLG Process centers on simplicity and accessibility, making it easy for everyone to participate and engage with Scripture.
Each session follows a straightforward format:
Read Scripture Together:
A passage of 5-9 verses is selected for the group to focus on during the session.

Break the Passage into Discussion Points:
Leaders and participants will read the passage aloud for everyone to hear. Then ask the following questions to help participants delve deeper into the meaning of the Scripture and its application to their lives.
Ask Three Core Questions:
- What words did you hear?
- What impact does this have on you?
- What will you do differently?

These questions create a structured yet open-ended discussion, encouraging participants to reflect on God’s Word and share insights in a safe and supportive environment.
To maintain a positive and impactful experience, group meetings will follow these essential guidelines:
- Confidentiality: Treat all shared comments as private and confidential.
- Respect: Show respect to all participants and their contributions.
- Celebrate: After each person shares, thank them for sharing.
- Focus: Avoid discussing politics or social issues; the focus is on God’s Word and its application to our lives.
- Optional Sharing: While sharing personal experiences is encouraged, it’s not required. Participants should feel comfortable engaging at their own pace.
